If you are wearing a wig for the first time this winter, you want to make sure that you take good care of it. There are specific actions you can take to protect your wig and ensure that it lasts and looks great all winter long.
Cover Up Your Wig
When you go outside, you don't want to get your wig wet. You also don't want to get the hair in your wig all tangled up by a winter breeze.
The best way to protect your wig in the winter time is cover it up. Keep a satin scarf with you and wrap it around your head when you go outside. The softness and fluidness of the satin will ensure that your hair will be protected without getting tangled or damaged.
Avoid rougher fabrics, such as wool; wool hats can also tangle up your hair and damage it.
Condition Your Wig
You should make sure that you take good care of your wig with quality products. You do not need to clean your wig on a regular basis; however, you should deep condition your wig at least once a week in the winter time, if you are wearing the wig on a daily basis. If you are only wearing the wig a few times a week, you can deep condition it once every three or four weeks.
When you use a deep conditioner, make sure that it is one with moisturizing properties; this will help lock in the moisture in your wig and prevent it from drying out. Wigs, just like your skin, can easily dry out in the winter. Cold air outside, combined with dry, hot air inside, can contribute to dry hair damage, which is why it is important to keep your wig well moisturized.
Always Dry Your Wig
If you wash your wig, don't wear it outside while it is still wet. Instead, wash your wig and allow it time to air dry. This will allow your wig to dry in the most natural and non-damaging environment.
You don't want to use heat on your wig, such as a hair dryer, as it can damage your wig and cause the hair to split. You shouldn't wear your hair outside when it is wet and cold outside, either, as the coldness could cause your hair to split.
When you need to wash your wig, make sure you allow enough time for it to air dry.
